1651 – The newly completed Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers) by Gian Lorenzo Bernini was unveiled in Rome. The fountain features four river gods, each representing one of the four major rivers of the known continents at the time: the Nile (Africa), the Ganges (Asia), the Danube (Europe), and the Río de la Plata (Americas).
