1857 – James Gibbs, a Virginia-based inventor, patented the chain-stitch single-thread sewing machine. Gibbs’ machine was particularly well-suited for sewing leather and heavy fabrics, and was widely used in the production of shoes, harnesses, and other leather goods.
1914 – Glenn Curtiss flies his Langley Aerodrome. The Langley Aerodrome was an early experimental aircraft designed by Samuel Langley, a pioneer in aviation research.
1924 – President Calvin Coolidge signed the Indian Citizenship Act, also known as the Snyder Act. It granted citizenship to all Native Americans born in the United States.
1935 – Babe Ruth, the legendary American baseball player, announced his retirement from baseball. Ruth had a remarkable career as a player, setting numerous records and establishing himself as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport.
1953 – Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in Westminster Abbey, London, England. The coronation ceremony was a grand and elaborate affair, steeped in tradition and attended by dignitaries and royalty from around the world.
1966 – US Surveyor 1 lands on the Moon. This was the first spacecraft to made a soft landing on the Moon and return close-up images of the lunar surface.

1977 – New Jersey legalized casino gambling in Atlantic City. The introduction of casino gambling in Atlantic City proved to be a major success, attracting millions of visitors and generating billions of dollars in revenue for the state of New Jersey.
1979 – John Paul II becomes first pope to visit a Communist country. The country he visited was his native Poland.
