1858 – The pencil with an attached eraser was patented by Hyman Lipman of Philadelphia USA.
1867 – The United States bought Alaska from Russia. The purchase price was $7.2 million, roughly 2 cents an acre.
1909 – The Queensboro Bridge, also known as the 59th Street Bridge, was opened. It connects the neighborhood of Long Island City in the borough of Queens with Manhattan. The bridge is a significant landmark in New York City and an important transportation route.
1981 – US President Ronald Reagan was shot and wounded in an assassination attempt in Washington, D.C., outside the Washington Hilton Hotel, where Reagan had just finished delivering a speech. He was shot by John Hinckley Jr., who was later found not guilty by reason of insanity.
1992 – “The Silence of the Lambs”, starring Anthony Hopkins and Jodie Foster, won five Academy Awards Oscars including: Best Picture, Best Director (Jonathan Demme), Best Actor (Anthony Hopkins), Best Actress (Jodie Foster) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Ted Tally).
