What happened in history on January 2nd?
1839 – The first photograph of the Moon captured by French photographer Louis-Jacques-Mandé Daguerre. The photograph, commonly referred to as “Boulevard du Temple,” was an early example of daguerreotype photography.
1842 – The first US wire suspension bridge for general traffic opened in Philadelphia. The 358-foot (109-meter) long bridge spanned the Schuylkill River and connected Philadelphia with West Conshohocken.
1906 – Willis Carrier received a US patent for the world’s first air conditioner. The patent, titled “Apparatus for Treating Air” (US Patent No. 808,897), laid the foundation for the modern air conditioning systems we use today.
1959 – The USSR launches Mechta, also known as Luna 1. It was the first spacecraft to reach the vicinity of the Moon, passing within 5,995 kilometers (3,725 miles) of the Moon’s surface.
1971 – Ibrox disaster, a tragic incident that took place at Ibrox Stadium, the home of Rangers Football Club. During a football match between Rangers and Celtic, a large crush occurred in a stairway exit at the end of the game. The crush resulted in a total of 66 fatalities and over 200 injuries, making it one of the deadliest incidents in the history of British sports.
1972 – Mariner 9, the NASA spacecraft began to return photos of Martian landscape for the first time. It was the first spacecraft to orbit Mars and provided the first detailed images of the Martian surface. Mariner 9’s mission was to study the planet’s atmosphere, surface and climate.
1974 – President Richard Nixon signs the Emergency Highway Energy Conservation Act, setting a new national maximum speed limit to 55 miles an hour (mph) on all interstate highways. This measure aimed to conserve fuel and reduce energy consumption during a time of fuel shortages.

1983 – After 2,377 performances, the musical “Annie” closes at the Alvin Theatre in New York City. It opened on April 21, 1977, and ran for approximately six years and seven months. During its run, “Annie” became one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history at that time.
