What happened in history on February 2

1653 – New Amsterdam officially became a city. In 1664, the English seized the city and renamed it New York in honor of the Duke of York.

1852 – The first British public men’s toilet opened on Fleet Street in London. The toilet was part of efforts led by public health reformers to improve hygiene and urban living conditions in rapidly growing cities.

1876 – Baseball’s National League (NL) was formed. The founding teams included: Boston Red Stockings, Chicago White Stockings, Cincinnati Red Stockings, Hartford Dark Blues, Louisville Grays, New York Mutuals, Philadelphia Athletics and St. Louis Brown Stockings.

1887 – The first official Groundhog Day observed at Gobbler’s Knobon, in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. The event was organized by a group of groundhog hunters known as the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club, and it centered around the prediction made by a groundhog named Punxsutawney Phil.

1892 – Bottle cap patented by William Painter. The crown cork had 24 teeth and a cork seal with a paper backing to prevent contact between the contents and the metal cap. The current version has 21 teeth.

1901 – Queen Victoria’s funeral service took place at St. George’s Chapel in Windsor Castle. She was later interred in the Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore, alongside her husband, Prince Albert.
