What happened in history on December 24th?

1818 – “Silent Night” carol (German: “Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht”) was first performed in the small town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria, at St. Nicholas Church. The song was composed by choir director Franz Xaver Gruber, with lyrics written by young priest Joseph Mohr. Today, “Silent Night” is one of the most beloved and widely performed Christmas carols worldwide.

1871 – Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “Aida” premiered at the Khedivial Opera House in Cairo, Egypt. The opera was commissioned to celebrate the opening of the new opera house and to mark the occasion of the inauguration of the Suez Canal. “Aida” is one of Verdi’s most famous and enduring works, known for its grand scale, dramatic story and powerful music.

1893 – Henry Ford completed his first useful gasoline-fueled engine. This early internal combustion engine was a significant step in the development of the automotive industry. 1895 – George Vanderbilt officially opened the Biltmore Estate. The estate is one of the largest privately-owned homes in the United States. The Biltmore House is immense, boasting over 178,000 square feet of floor space. It has 250 rooms, including 35 bedrooms and 43 bathrooms. The estate encompasses around 8,000 acres of land.
